Zygo Limelight

I found this Christmas cactus at my local market. The label says, "Zygo Limelight." I was so happy to find it. I lost my two beautiful large plants during the ice storm last winter when the power was out for six days. I looked forward to replacing them this season. I'm not sure why, but there have been very few in the market so I'm very glad to have this one!

Three Persimmons

These persimmons were in a basket with a sign that said, "Free - Ripe Persimmons...eat like an apple." I've eaten persimmon cookies, but have never tasted a ripe persimmon. Absolutely delicious! Where have they been all my life?

Tea Break

I enjoy using the fracturing process that was developed by Julie Ford Oliver. It  allows me to create a more free and looser painting, but mostly it's just fun to do.

Little Cinderella

Well, hello! I've been away from my easel for quite a long time. Just felt a little flat and uninspired, needed to take a break. I've picked up my brushes again and once again am enjoying the painting process.

This is a miniature white pumpkin. The large white pumpkins in the grocery store were labeled "Cinderella", and I thought "Little Cinderella" fit this little painting. I experimented with the panel surface by adding another couple of coats of gesso to the gessoboard panel. There is a bit of gesso on the back of the panel, but it does not affect the painting.

Bosc Pear

SOLD

This is another values study. I'm following artist Paul Foxton's instructions for mixing color. This method employs the use of the New Munsell Student Color Set book as an aid to selecting the appropriate color, value, and chroma. I love this way of painting. It has caused me to slow down and give thought to each brushstroke. Lots of fun!

Swinging Single

SOLD

This little gal is hanging out all by herself in the water glass, but she seems pretty jolly. I think she enjoys her own company.

Secret Garden

We each have a secret garden,
Where no one can intrude -
A haven of rest and quiet
and blessed solitude.

Private Party

SOLD

These little tulips were sitting just outside the door of my local market. It was a wet, rainy day, but they were so cheery that I had to have them. I've been working to get more color into my paintings and it seemed they would be perfect models. Little did I know that they would be as wiggly as children. They are blowsy and bright. I hope I can paint fast enough to get a second painting with their petals open. Silly girls!

Waiting For Santa

Christmas Eve is magical. I still feel twinges of childhood anticipation waiting for Santa. On Christmas morning it was thrilling to see that Santa had visited our house in the night. In my heart, Santa still visits on Christmas Eve.

This little mouse has been patiently waiting for Santa, but finally fell asleep just before Santa came down the mouse chimney.

This  painting will be ready for shipping at the first of the New Year.

Satsuma

SOLD

It's dark and stormy this afternoon, and lights are glittering in the windows of neighborhood homes. These little orange satsumas seem to shine with their own special glow.

Rue Saint-Dominique

SOLD

I'm back at my easel after a busy, fun-filled summer that included a two week vacation in Paris. We took lots of photos while we were there, so I plan to spend this autumn painting Paris scenes and rekindling fond memories of that enchanting city.

Florabunda and Daisies

SOLD

The garden is going crazy this June and the roses are especially beautiful.  I've been following Sarah Sedwick's postings recently. She's been creating some amazing paintings with limited palettes. I took a page from Sarah's book and attempted a limited the palette for this painting. I used ultramarine blue, cad red, and lemon yellow. It was a bit of a challenge, but overall, it was easier to control the colors when there were fewer choices.

May Days

SOLD

I'm still floating on a high from yesterday's art exhibit at the Benton County Historical Society and Museum. The venue was beautiful. The folks from the museum, Mark Tolonen and Irene Zenev, did a fabulous job of displaying the paintings and hosting the reception. We had a successful turnout and just had a great evening. I really appreciate the help and support of everyone involved.

I'm taking a little break from landscapes to paint flowers. Our garden has exploded in color and I'll need to paint fast if I want to capture the season. The flowers in this painting were part of my Mother's Day bouquet. They're still fresh and beautiful. So much color - so little time!

Little White House

I often drive by this cozy little home on my way home from downtown. It's a typical Eugene house, probably built during the early 1950s.

Looking East

This painting might look familiar. It's a painting I did a couple of weeks ago. I tried scumbling and glazing to see if I could unify the colors and create a bit of atmosphere. A glaze is a transparent wash over parts of the dried painting. It's used to deepen the color. Scumbling involves using opaque paint in an uneven layer. It creates a sort of film, and allows the first color shows through to some extent. The trees and the foreground were glazed with French Ultramarine Blue and Transparent Red Iron Oxide, and the mountains and sky were scumbled with Cad Orange, Cad Yellow Deep, and Titanium White.
